Last Friday, I traveled to Hokuto city in Yamanashi prefecture in order to watch a famous old big cherry blossom tree, “Yamataka Jindai Zakura” (the age of Gods cherry blossom in Yamataka). It has been said that Yamato Takeru (ancient hero of Japan) planed this tree, indeed this tree’s age is about 1800-2000 years. It is too old, so the upper part of branches were lost in Showa era (I found the picture of early 20 Century. It had upper parts.) But yet, the rest of branch bloomed beautiful blossoms. I was very surprised the size of trunk. It seemed like a rock. This is one of three great big cherry blossoms in Japan, Yamataka-Jindai Zakura, Miharu-Taki Zakura (Fukushima) and Neodani-Usuzumi Zakura (Gifu). I’ve visited all of three.
