Bodhidharma (Japanese calls Daruma) was a famous Zen monk of India who visited to China and had been performed zazen meditation of wall-gazing for 9 years. At Takasaki city in Gunma prefecture, Darumaji-temple (Shorinzan) has a Daruma’s statue that was made of good scent wood by Itiryo monk in 1680. This temple is famous for a doll of daruma. This roly-poly doll which always stands up was compared to the anecdote of Bodhidharma’s persistence during his nine-year Zen meditation, after which the face of Bodhidharma was painted on the doll.
