At Suntory Museum of Art in Roppongi, Tokyo, they have an exhibition of illustrated tales from Medieval Japan (Otogi-zoshi). There are mouse, monkey, devil and snake in the illustrations. Some of the stories, “Urashima Taro”, “Issun Hoshi” and “Syuten Doji” are still read now. After that, I visited the Kodansha Noma memorial Museum at Mejiro. They holds the exhibition of the early Showa’s picture books. Both Medieval and modern illustrations are beautiful and vivid.
