From September 29 to October 28, 2012 the 29th National Urban Greenery Fair Tokyo has been holding at Tokyo. At Hama-rikyu garden, they exhibit and introduce about historical cultural gardens of Edo. These photos are posters from the display.
chrysanthemum in 1694
At Edo period, they loved the contest of chrysanthemum. It is a re-creation of the contest.
Sadanobu Matsudaira was a member of shogun’s council of elders (1758-1829) who wrote a book about the cherry blossoms. This is his book. These pictures are manuscript in 19C by a Japanese painter Yoshinobu Kano.
There are many kinds of cherry blossoms in Edo period.

Ikebana, flower arrangement (1628-1629)
A gardner Imaemon at Dennaka made 100 chrysanthemums of one stem. It became very popular in Edo. This picutre was drawn by Kuniyoshi Utagawa.
Hokusai Katsuhika, who was a Ukiyoe painter of “Fugaku 36kei”, visited to see this chrysanthemum (wearing blue kimono). The right side man was reading the advertisement of chrysanthemum.
It became popular to make chrysanthemum figures in 1845. It is said 100 gardners challenged to make them. It was the chrysanthemum figure of Mt. Fuji and cranes of Yanaka’s gardner.

The center is the Edo castle which was surrounding the blue moat.
